DESCRIPTION

This course offers an in-depth introduction to ethnography as a rigorous qualitative research approach for examining how health, illness, and care are experienced in everyday life. Emphasizing the social, cultural, and political determinants of health, it critically explores how health inequalities are produced, sustained, and contested across diverse contexts. Through applied ethnographic methods, participants develop advanced analytical skills to generate nuanced insights and design context-sensitive, evidence-informed solutions to complex, real-world health challenges.

CONTENT

This course is designed for participants based in non–North American contexts, particularly those working or studying in Latin America and other regions of the Global South. Offered entirely in Spanish, it expands access to ethnographic training for professionals, researchers, and students often excluded from English-dominant global health education. By centering ethnographic approaches rooted in Global South contexts, the course equips participants to critically examine how health, care, and inequality are experienced locally, while contributing to the decentering of Northern epistemologies and supporting more equitable, culturally grounded, and context-sensitive research practices.

OBJECTIVES

  • Introduce participants to the core principles of ethnography as a qualitative approach in global health

  • Build foundational knowledge of ethnographic methods for examining health, illness, care, and inequality in Global South contexts

  • Foster critical understanding of how social, cultural, and political factors shape local health experiences and responses

  • Encourage critical reflection on dominant, Northern-centered epistemologies in global health research and practice

  • Support the development of more equitable, culturally grounded, and context-sensitive approaches to research and intervention

  • Promote ethical and reflexive engagement with qualitative research across diverse linguistic and regional settings

TARGET AUDIENCE

Designed for individuals with a strong interest in qualitative research and little to no prior experience, this course provides a structured and accessible introduction to ethnographic methods. Delivered entirely in Spanish, it seeks to broaden access to high-quality ethnographic training for researchers, practitioners, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and regional backgrounds, fostering inclusive participation in qualitative health research and practice.
