Dr. Bridget Andersen awarded the Dr. Allie Vibert Douglas Astrophysics PhD Thesis Prize

Published: 28 January 2026

Congratulations to Dr. Bridget Andersen, who has received the Dr. Allie Vibert Douglas Astrophysics PhD Thesis Prize!

, the prize was established by Physics professor and Director of the Trottier Space Institute Vicky Kaspi to shine a light on the legacy of astrophysics trailblazer and 鶹ýվ graduate Allie Vibert Douglas.

The prize is awarded annually, upon the recommendation of the Department of Physics, to one PhD student who presents the best thesis in astrophysics.

Andersen, ɳ’s now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studies radio transients like fast radio bursts (FRBs) and pulsars. During her time at 鶹ýվ, she joined the CHIME/FRB Collaboration as a foundational member.

As part of her prize-winning PhD thesis, Andersen led the development of a new radio telescope system for the CHIME/FRB Collaboration to precisely pinpoint fast radio bursts, created methods to link these bursts to their host galaxies, and discovered a rare and unusual binary pulsar system.

"I've been fortunate to be in the right place, at the right time, to work on cutting-edge advancements in our understanding of the radio universe with my amazing colleagues at 鶹ýվ and in the wider CHIME/FRB Collaboration,” said Andersen. “I am excited to continue using the telescopes I've helped build to uncover the origins of fast radio bursts and use them as cosmological probes of our Universe. I am also thankful to Dr. Vibert Douglas, who paved the way almostexactly one hundred years ago."
