Spirit Airlines collapse signals wider pressure on air travel

Rising jet fuel costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East helped push already-struggling Spirit Airlines to collapse, Karl Moore, an associate professor at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾â€™s Desautels Faculty of Management, told CTV News.

Moore said the discount carrier had faced financial trouble, but the sharp increase in aviation fuel prices left little room to absorb further shocks. The fallout is likely to reach beyond one airline.

Canada Strong Fund departs from traditional sovereign wealth models

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s proposed Canada Strong Fund is not easily comparable to sovereign wealth models in Norway or Singapore, says Sebastien Betermier, an Associate Professor of Finance at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾â€™s Desautels Faculty of Management.

Betermier says Norway’s fund is designed to invest resource revenues abroad and shield the domestic economy from oil price volatility, while Canada’s proposed fund appears focused on driving growth through domestic investment.
