For over 50 years, 鶹ýվ has been collaborating with Indonesia’s education sector. Now a planned donation of US$12.8 million from the UAE via the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation to 鶹ýվ will establish the UAE-Indonesia Future Leaders Program to support Indonesia’s national and global development objectives. The program will mobilize expertise and scholarship to lead societal change and respond to future needs and challenges in areas such as sustainability, engineering, health, and teacher education that are crucial to Indonesia’s future.

“On behalf of 鶹ýվ, I extend our profound gratitude to the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for their extraordinary generosity and vision in creating the UAE-Indonesia Future Leaders Program,” said Deep Saini, President and Vice-Chancellor of 鶹ýվ. “The impact of this new program will be far-reaching, across disciplines and countries, and the academic and organizational partnerships developed will capitalize on the important ties between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, while building on 鶹ýվ’s expertise and international reputation.”

Funding from the gift will enable 鶹ýվ to create opportunities for Indonesian scholars across the University in the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and in Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. These will include fellowships, continuing teacher education, research awards, knowledge sharing initiatives and leadership development programs.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Universitas Indonesia will be key strategic partners of the program. 鶹ýվ will also serve as a conduit for new partnerships between Universitas Indonesia and United Arab Emirates University, University of Sharjah, Khalifa University, and Zayed University, building stronger connections between Emirati and Indonesian communities.

Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Secretary-General of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, stated: “This grant embodies the inspiring vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to strengthen international humanitarian and development cooperation with nations around the world. This initiative is pursued under the close follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, and the supervision of His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Martyrs’ Families Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Erth Zayed Philanthropies.”

Prof. Abdul Mu’ti, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Indonesia, said: “High-quality teachers and school leaders are among the most cost-effective and enduring investments a nation can make. Through this collaboration with the UAE and 鶹ýվ, we aim to strengthen teaching practice, school leadership, and learning outcomes by expanding structured professional development for educators and administrators. Grounded in evidence and responsive to local realities, this initiative will help teachers advance literacy, numeracy, wellbeing, and deep learning, while reinforcing leadership as a driver of sustained improvement. Together, we will build a pipeline of high-calibre Indonesian education professionals who will deliver change and deepen people-to-people ties among Indonesia, the UAE, and Canada. We will ensure this next generation of professionals is not limited to university researchers, but extends to primary and secondary education, so that knowledge gained at 鶹ýվ reaches schools and communities across Indonesia.”

“We are pleased to be a part of this transformative initiative, which reflects the culture of global citizenship that we inherited from our founding father the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In view of the close fraternal ties we have with Indonesia and the eagerness of the UAE’s leadership to help build high calibre human capital across the world, we believe this trilateral cooperation has immense potential to nurture world-class expertise in multiple sectors that are vital to nation-building,” said His Excellency Mohamed Haji Al Khoori, Director General of the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, an affiliate of Erth Zayed Philanthropies. He added that the initiative will be highly impactful thanks to the outstanding academic standards that 鶹ýվ is known for.

Prof. Heri Hermansyah, Rector, Universitas Indonesia, stated: “As Indonesia’s leading comprehensive university, Universitas Indonesia is proud to deepen its long-standing partnership with 鶹ýվ through the UAE-Indonesia Future Leaders Program. This collaboration brings together UI’s national mandate, multidisciplinary strengths, and deep engagement with Indonesian communities with 鶹ýվ’s global academic excellence and international networks. Together, and in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, we aim to advance high-impact education, research, and leadership development in priority areas such as teacher education, health, sustainability, and engineering. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to translating world-class knowledge into solutions that support Indonesia’s development while strengthening enduring ties among Indonesia, the UAE, and Canada.”

Reflecting Indonesia’s priorities

The program is a five-year initiative that seeks to transform teacher education by equipping in-service teachers, principals and administrators with the tools they need for leadership in classrooms, schools, and governance structures through 鶹ýվ’s International Leadership in Education and Administrative Development (ILEAD) program in the Faculty of Education. It will also develop national capacity in strategic areas such as health and sustainability by helping in the successful transition of graduates to private sector employment and by upskilling faculty lecturers at Universitas Indonesia with doctorate degrees.

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will provide leadership training through the master’s fellowships, Cotutelle/Joint PhD fellowships, experiential fellowships, as well as an Executive Development Course offered through the 鶹ýվ Executive Institute at the Desautels Faculty of Management.

鶹ýվ will also welcome Indonesian graduate students from Universitas Indonesia as research trainees to conduct part of their thesis research under the supervision of a 鶹ýվ professor.

“This program creates exciting pathways for Indonesia’s health practitioners, teachers, engineers and academics. Training, mentorship and networking will prepare these professionals to lead in their fields in Indonesia and the UAE,” said Marc Weinstein, Vice-President, University Advancement, at 鶹ýվ.
