Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ researchers identify bacteria that could provide an early warning of blue-green algae toxicity

Mon, 11/03/2025 - 11:25

Researchers at Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ have identifiedÌýbacteria that can indicate whether a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom is likely to be toxic, offering a potential water-safety early warning system. Blooms are becoming more frequent due to climate change, according toÌýprevious Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ research. They can produce various contaminants, known as cyanotoxins, that pose serious health risks to humans, pets and wildlife.

Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ honours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
