The NCUSR webcast streaming will be preceded by in-person and virtual discussion hosted by the CGCS on the theme of “Canada-China-US Relations."

  • Denis Simon: Denis Simon is an expert on international business, innovation, talent, and global science and technology affairs. He has more than four decades of experience studying innovation, R&D, and talent strategy in contemporary China. Currently, he is holder of the Bank of America Chair in International Finance at the Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University. He also is a Senior Fellow at the Quincy Institute in Washington, DC. He is former Visiting Professor within the Asian Pacific Studies Institute at Duke University (2022-2025). From 2015-2022, he served as professor of practice at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and Executive Vice Chancellor of Duke Kunshan University in China from 2015-2020. He was a founding member of the Experts Group of the US-China Innovation Dialogue organized by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and China’s Ministry of Science & Technology (2008-2016). He also has served as senior adviser on China and SIO at several major U.S. universities. From 1995-2000, he was general manager of Andersen Consulting in Beijing (now Accenture) and was founding president of Monitor Group China (2001-2002). He earned his PhD and MA from UC Berkeley and his BA from SUNY New Paltz. He speaks and reads Mandarin Chinese. In 2006, he was awarded the China National Friendship Award by then Premier Wen Jiabao in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
  • Pitman Potter: Emeritus Professor of Law at University of British Columbia. Potter’s teaching and research have focused on PRC and Taiwan law and policy in the areas of international trade and investment, dispute resolution, property and contract law, and human rights. Prior to his retirement in 2020, Potter also practiced as an attorney licensed in British Columbia, Washington State and California handling China business and arbitration matters. Dr. Potter has served on the Boards of Directors of several public institutions, including the Canada-China Business Council and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APFC) where he is currently a Distinguished Fellow Emeritus. Potter is a Deacon in the Anglican Church of Canada (Diocese of New Westminster). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Member of the Order of Canada.
