Türkiye is vulnerable to earthquakes due to its location on active fault lines and at the convergence of the Anatolian, Eurasian, and African tectonic plates, in a region where over 80 percent of the population lives in disaster-prone areas and significant natural events occur every five to ten years (AFAD, 2018). Here, we bring to light Türkiye's 100-year earthquake history. We initiated this study to explore how earthquakes in Türkiye have been represented in newspaper coverage, examining the duration and manner of the discussions throughout the country's 100-year history. We hope this research will lead to many diverse studies, offering new insights and perspectives on this critical topic.
The data in this section is obtained from different sources. Statistics for each earthquake are from the Kadilli Observatory Earthquake Research Institute, Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring and Evaluation Center at Boğaziçi University. In addition, the attached newspapers are from the Istanbul University History Newspaper Project, the Cumhuriyet Daily Newspaper and Archive, and the Milliyet Newspaper and Archive.
