BUSA 410: Experiential learning topics (3 credits)

Overview

Do you want to earn credits during your summer internship? Enroll in BUSA 410: Summer Internships in Management. This course helps you maximize your internship by teaching key transferable skills, guiding you to recognize and leverage networking opportunities, and enhancing your professional and self-awareness.

Course structure

We will meet in person May 1st for an all-day kick-off session. This mandatory session will include individual and group activities, as well as panels featuring industry managers and recent alumni.

Between May and August, four online workshops will be scheduled Saturday mornings from 10 am to 12pm or weekdays after 5pm EST if needed. Each workshop will cover new content, time for reflection, and a check-in with the instructor. We will share the workshop schedule as soon as it is available.

We will conclude on August 28th with a final in-person wrap-up session, where everyone will come together to reflect on our individual and collective learnings.

Course objectives

This course has three overarching objectives:

  • Bridge the theory/practice gap
  • Build self-awareness to help your professional growth
  • Build skills to help you succeed in your internship

How to register

Please complete to receive permission from the instructor. You may fill out the form now, if you already have an internship lined up; however, you will not be able to officially register for the course until Summer course registration opens in early March.

FAQ

1. When can I register?

You can register in March when registration for Spring/Summer courses open.

2. What if I can’t attend the in-person sessions?

You must be able to attend the May 1st in-person session in order to take this course.

3. Do I need to find my own internship?

Yes, you will be responsible for finding your own internship. However, please note that Career Management is there to help you! See here for more resources.

4. What are the time requirements for the internship?

Your internship must last at least 8 weeks of full-time work, or 16 weeks of part-time work. You may have an internship that lasts longer than this as well.

You will have to provide proof of employment by the first day of class (e.g. a contract or offer letter).

5. What if I quit my internship or am fired?

If it is before the add/drop deadline, you will be asked to drop the class or find another internship. Otherwise, it will be handled on a case-by-case basis, depending on how much of the course has already been completed.

6. What if I am in a different time zone for my internship?

The workshops will be held in the evenings and on weekend mornings to accommodate the different time zones.

7. Does my internship need to be related to my major or to my studies?

No, your internship can be in any field or topic as long as it meets the time requirements.

8. Can this course count towards my major?

No, at this time, this course does not count towards any majors. However, it does fulfill the EL Degree Requirement.
