Description:This Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Helmut Sies, a pioneer in redox biology and the scientist who introduced the concept of oxidative stress.

Building on the foundations of stress research first described by Hans Selye at 鶹ýվ in 1936, Dr. Sies will explore the dynamic balance of redox homeostasis in aerobic metabolism. His lecture will highlight the central role of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in cellular regulation, distinguishing between its essential signaling functions (“oxidative eustress”) and its damaging effects at higher levels (“oxidative distress”).

This talk will provide insights into emerging challenges in redox medicine and the fine-tuning of oxidative processes in health and disease.

Speaker: Helmut Sies, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized leader in biochemistry and molecular biology. He served as Professor and Chairman at the Institute for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. He is currently a Research Professor and Senior Scientist at the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine.

Dr. Sies introduced the concept of oxidative stress and made seminal contributions to understanding the role of hydrogen peroxide in biological systems. His work has significantly shaped modern redox biology and nutritional biochemistry, including research on antioxidants such as carotenoids, flavonoids, and selenium.

With over 800 scientific publications, he is among the most highly cited researchers in the life sciences and has been widely recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field.
