It allows us to do b etter urban planning\, combat new diseases\, ensure national security\, an d has become the driving force behind innovation\, productivity\, and grow th. All these new possibilities are enabled by new technologies that are c apable of storing\, integrating\, and analyzing all sorts of digital bread crumbs that we leave behind in this information age.\n\nOn one hand\, the collected data offers tremendous opportunities for mining useful informati on. On the other hand\, the mining process poses a threat to individual pr ivacy since the collected data often contains sensitive information. The c urrent practice in data sharing relies primarily on policies and guideline s on the types of data that can be shared and agreements on the use of sha red data. This approach alone may lead to excessive data distortion or ins ufficient protection. \n\nThis talk will present the recent research resul ts that try to find a right balance between the privacy protection and big data rewards. In particular\, I will explain different definitions of pri vacy model\, show their limitations\, describe some algorithms to enforce them\, and discuss open problems for future research.\n\nBIO\n\nNoman Moha mmed is an NSERC postdoctoral fellow in the School of Computer Science at Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾. Before coming to Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾\, he was a member of the Crypto graphy\, Security\, & Privacy (CrySP) research group at the University of Waterloo. He received a PhD in Computer Science from Concordia University in 2012. His research interests include private data sharing\, privacy-pre serving data mining\, secure distributed systems\, trustworthy cloud compu ting\, and applied cryptography. He has received several prestigious award s including NSERC postdoctoral fellowship\, Alexander Graham Bell Canada G raduate Scholarship (NSERC CGS)\, and the Best Student Paper Award in ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining\, 2 009. http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~noman\n\n \n\nPlease note: this talk will be held in the Education Building\, Room 211. \n\nEveryone welcome. Please a rrive early to secure a seat. \n\n \n DTSTART:20140221T190000Z DTEND:20140221T200000Z LOCATION:Room 211\, Education Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1Y2\, 370 0 rue McTavish SUMMARY:SIS Seminar Series: 'Big Data & Privacy.'
