Big federal funding for FMHS cancer prevention research

Part of the largest CIHR-led cancer prevention investment, 鶹ýվ researchers will develop approaches to reduce cancer risk and improve early detection

Four 鶹ýվ researchers have received$7.9 milliontotal infunding from theCanadian Institutes of HealthResearch (CIHR)and partnersthroughtheBringing Biology to Cancer Prevention Team Grants program,bytheHonourableMarjorie Michel, Canada’s Minister of Health.

Over $41 million infundingwas announced tosupport 19 teams that will work over the next five years to develop and sharenew approachesthat support cancer prevention, reduce cancer risk, and improve early detection for some of themost commonly diagnosedcancers in Canada and the world.

The fundingis led by CIHR in partnership with the Terry Fox Research Institute, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, the Cancer Research Society, andBioCanRx.It is the single largest CIHR-led investment in cancer prevention research to date.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and it is estimated to cost the health care system, patients, and familiesnearly$37.7 billionevery year. Up to 40% of cancer cases could be prevented through changes in lifestyle and environmental factors, includingprevention strategiesandearlydetection.

“Research can save lives and reduce the burden of cancer. Scientists, clinicians, trainees, survivors, families, cancer advocates, and others all have a role to play. When one of us succeeds, we allbenefitfrom that success,” saidHonourableMarjorie Michel. “Today’s announcement is a great example of how by working together across countries, and across disciplines, we can build a stronger, more resilient, and healthier Canada.”
