Doctoral Colloquium:ÌýErivan Duarte (PhD candidate, Interdisciplinary Studies)

Title:Ìý“Music-Making Beyond Hearing: Deaf Perspectives in the Co-Design of Inclusive Musical Technologiesâ€

This project investigates music-making within the Deaf community and explores how collaborative design processes can inform more inclusive musical technologies. Grounded in participatory fieldwork, it situates Deaf musicians’ experiences at the intersection of sensory access, technology, and cultural identity. The research follows a three-phase methodology: (1) a survey identifying barriers and needs in music-making and existing technologies; (2) participatory workshops where Deaf musicians conceptualized non-functional instrument prototypes; and (3) the development and evaluation of functional Accessible Digital Musical Instruments (ADMIs). This presentation focuses on the first two phases, highlighting two emergent themes: (1) distinctive patterns of music engagement within the Deaf community, and (2) the influence of Deaf cultural identity on music engagement and technology design. By centering Deaf perspectives, the study deepens understanding of how music is created and experienced beyond hearing, showing how Deaf approaches can inspire inclusive and culturally grounded forms of music-making and technology.

Erivan Duarte is a musician, composer, and PhD candidate in Music at Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾. His work bridges artistic creation, accessibility, and community engagement. Through participatory research with Deaf and disabled people, he explores how music, technology, and shared creative processes can foster inclusion and new forms of creative practice.

The Doctoral Colloquium is open to all.
