Doctoral Colloquium: Prof. Barbara Lüneburg (guest, Artistic Research)

Title:Agency and Empowerment through Artistic Research

Abstract: This talk traces how three major artistic research projects have reshaped my agency as a performer and expanded my identity as an artist. In “A Holistic View of the Creative Potential of Performance Practice in Contemporary Music,” I examined collaborative models between composers, promoters, and performers, and explored how concert aura and charisma can be intentionally shaped while transforming my role from interpreter to (co-)creator. “TransCoding–From ‘Highbrow Art’ to Participatory Culture” shifted my relation to audiences by challenging traditional power dynamics and incorporating community participation into the creation of a multimedia work, while deepening my understanding of my own compositional potential. My current project, “Embodying Expression, Gender, Charisma—Breaking Boundaries of Classical Instrumental Practices,” expands this empowerment through the development and application of two innovative methodologies that have reshaped my artistic practice as a performer and my understanding of gender, expression, and charisma in European art music through research.

Biography: Barbara Lüneburg, Professor of Artistic Research at Anton Bruckner University (Linz, Austria), is a violinist of international reputation in the fields of contemporary music and multimedia who has appeared at festivals across Europe, in both Americas and Asia. Lüneburg’s arts-based research focuses on instrumental performance studies with an emphasis on embodiment, collaboration, gender, charisma, participatory and game-based art, and artistic research. She has led two major multi-year research projects funded by the Austrian Science Fund.

The Doctoral Colloquium is open to all.
