T he date marks the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau \, the Nazi’s largest concentration and extermination camp.\n\nIHRD helps keep vital lessons from history alive in public memory and can help streng then our abilities recognize and resist dehumanization and the subtle\, mu ndane means by which atrocities sometimes occur.\n\nBelow are two local Ho locaust Remembrance Day events that will bring the history to life:\n\nJan uary 25th\, 5:00 PM: Screening of Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire and a conversa tion with Elisha Wiesel For International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join the Montreal Holocaust Museum for the Montreal premiere of the documentar y film “Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire.” The screening will be followed by a di scussion with his son\, Elisha Wiesel\, who continues to uphold his father ’s humanitarian legacy through his work as Chairman of the Board at the El ie Wiesel Foundation. Eighty years after his liberation from Buchenwald\, we seek to understand the man behind Elie Wiesel’s searing and widely read memoir Night. Told largely through his own words and eloquent voice\, Eli e Wiesel: Soul on Fire penetrates to the heart of the known and unknown El ie Wiesel (1928-2016)—his passions\, his conflicts and his legacy as one o f the most public survivors of the Holocaust. With unique access to person al archives\, original interviews and employing hand-painted animation\, t he film illuminates Wiesel’s biography as a survivor\, writer\, teacher\, public figure and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Professor Luft will share her research on the Holocaust in France in a lec ture titled “Between God and Vichy: Religion\, Race\, and the Holocaust in France.' Professor Luft's research examines the fluctuating relationships between social identity\, ideology\, and interpersonal\, socio-political action in contexts marked by war and violence. Her book\, Sacred Betrayal: How the French Catholic Church Broke Its Pledge to Protect Jews During th e Holocaust\, is forthcoming with Harvard University Press in Fall 2026.
