Jo-Anne is in charge of membership, recruitment and engagement. She maintains membership records, a database of member expertise and experience, provides annual statistical analyses, develops and updates a network of departmental MAUT representatives, and supports their activities. She tracks MAUT accomplishments and promotes awareness of them within MAUT and externally.Ìý Jo-Anne also manages our organization's day to day operations, and arranges all meetings and special events.Ìý

Joseph Varga, a lawyer, serves as MAUT’s Professional and Legal Officer. He holds a degree in Industrial Relations (Economics) as well as two law degrees (B.C.L. and LL.B.) from McGIll University. He has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 1991 and has additional training and certificates in mediation and arbitration from the Barreau, as well as being a graduate of the Canadian Society of Association Executives Certificate Program.

He articled at the Federal Department of Justice (Civil Litigation) before working at the Senate of Canada. He has been with MAUT since 1994 and brings extensive experience in labour relations, economics, conditions of employment, and institutional governance, making him one of the most experienced professionals in his field in the country.

In his role, Joseph provides confidential information, assistance, and legal advice to members upon request, as well as to the Executive and Council. He helps ensure that the University’s policies and regulations are properly interpreted and applied. He also advises and assists in managing cases involving complaints, grievances and appeals. In addition, he serves on the Committee on Academic Staff Compensation, which meets regularly throughout the year. He participates in the activities of CAUT and FQPPU, MAUT’s national and provincial associations.

With over 30 years of experience, Joseph is highly knowledgeable about institutional regulations and the law and is available to provide guidance by telephone or in person by appointment at his office on campus.

-Office hours: Weekdays – 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

- In-person meetings: By appointment only (Tuesday and Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

The Professional and Legal Officer also maintains a roster of advisors who may be assigned as needed.
