Legume roots tolerate deficiency of the macronutrient Nitrogen by not only enhancing its direct uptake but also by establishing a unique symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria c alled rhizobia. Here I present findings that put genome-encoded small secr eted peptides or ‘peptide hormones’ at the center-stage of N-acquisition i n legumes. Our findings suggest that peptides likely provide a cheap\, env ironmentally-friendly\, non-GMO route to address current challenges of pla nt growth in nutrient-deprived soils.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nSonali Roy i s a molecular geneticist working on Small Signaling Peptides in the model legume Medicago truncatula. She investigated the role of the plant hormone Auxin in root nodule symbiosis while completing her doctoral degree at th e John Innes Centre in Norwich\, UK. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Noble Research Institute\, USA\, she continues pursuing her interests in regula tory molecules by studying novel peptide hormones with an emphasis on macr onutrient regulation of root and nodule development.\n DTSTART:20200127T150000Z DTEND:20200127T150000Z LOCATION:MS2-022\, Macdonald-Stewart Building\, CA\, QC\, St Anne de Bellev ue\, H9X 3V9\, 21111 Lakeshore Road SUMMARY:Regulation of Nitrogen Acquisition by Peptide Hormones URL:/macdonald/channels/event/regulation-nitrogen-acqu isition-peptide-hormones-313266 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
