The Kaushalam program, a collaborative initiative between the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Uttarakhand and the Udyam Learning Foundation, aims to cultivate 21st-century life skills and an entrepreneurial mindset among students in Uttarakhand. A comprehensive study conducted during the 2024–25 academic year assessed the program's impact on Grade 9 students across seven districts.

As the Ombudsperson for Students, Dr. Limin Jao (she/her) provides an independent, impartial, and confidential service through which students may seek equitable and informal resolution of any University-related concern. The Ombudsperson may also, where appropriate, review University policies, guidelines, and procedures affecting students, make recommendations for change, and promote discussion of student-related concerns across the University.

Remembering Howard Riggs

Howard Riggs was a dedicated, hard-working professor of math education. His work ethic was a product of his Prairie upbringing and his deep commitment to his students. He was hired by �鶹��ý��վ to teach social studies, but was pressed into service as a math educator in the Department of Elementary Education, one of the units that eventually morphed into DISE.

DISE's Nanre Nafziger Appointed a 2025 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow

We are proud to announce that Nanre Nafziger, DISE, is a 2025 National Academy of Education (NAEd)/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research topic is Contestations for Nigerian History Education in Primary and Secondary Schools: from Colonialism to Neocolonialism. This year, the selection committee, comprised of leading scholars in education research, selected 25 fellows from an extremely competitive pool of 270 education scholars.

Kiana Kishiyama remembers feeling scared when, at the start of her first undergraduate class in beginner’s Mandarin, her teacher looked at her and said, “You need to speak to me after class.”

“And I’m like, what, I’m in trouble already?”

It turned out that the teacher believed that Kishiyama, who was adopted from China by a Canadian couple, was just being modest about her language skills.

A novel approach to educating future teachers about the environment and sustainability

�鶹��ý��վ’s Faculty of Education is pioneering a new approach to sustainability education that goes beyond traditional teaching methods. Led by Associate Professor Blane Harvey, with contributions from PhD candidate Stephanie Leite, the initiative uses a co-design and co-teaching model where students, schoolteachers, and community members collaborate to develop and deliver courses.

UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development in India (MGIEP) recently hosted Faculty of Education Dean, Vivek Venkatesh, and Professor Joseph Levitan, DISE, for a dialogue on community based participatory action research, and pluralism and polarization.

Their visit was part of a research tour including a dialogue on these topics to foster collaboration and to exchange ideas on education and societal challenges.
