Connecting AI Ecosystems: The Lamarr Institute Visits Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾

The visit to Â鶹´«Ã½Íøվ’s Computational and Data Systems Institute fostered meaningful exchanges on shared research interests and opened pathways for new joint projects and publications.

On October 20, 2025, Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ was pleased to welcome a delegation from Germany’s , one of Europe’s leading centres of excellence in AI research. Part of a Canada-wide mission, their visit signalled a shared interest in deepening scientific collaboration between German and Canadian researchers working at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Hosted by Â鶹´«Ã½Íøվ’s Computational and Data Systems Institute (CDSI), the meeting brought together experts from across the university whose research spans the Institute’s priority areas: foundation models, AI in robotics, AI in health, and responsible and ethical AI. The discussions highlighted strong complementarities between Â鶹´«Ã½Íøվ’s interdisciplinary strengths in AI and data science and the Lamarr Institute’s mission to develop AI that is powerful, sustainable, secure, and aligned with societal values.

The Lamarr Institute, jointly supported by , the , and the Fraunhofer Institutes and , plays an integral role in advancing Germany’s national AI strategy. The Institute is dedicated to addressing fundamental challenges at the interface of technology, business, and society. Their visit offered an opportunity to learn about Â鶹´«Ã½Íøվ’s research ecosystem, including the work of CDSI in amplifying and connecting AI initiatives across faculties.

Conversations throughout the visit focused on identifying shared priorities and exploring opportunities for co-developing AI solutions with real-world impact. Both sides expressed strong interest for future collaboration, particularly in emerging areas that call for multidisciplinary expertise, from advancing the safety and interpretability of foundation models to leveraging AI for improved health outcomes and robotics applications.

The visit is expected to serve as a starting point for sustained cooperation. Early discussions pointed to promising avenues for joint publications, collaborative research proposals, and participation in upcoming international funding calls.

Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ looks forward to building strong ties with the Lamarr Institute and contributing to a growing network of partnerships that support responsible, innovative, and globally competitive AI research.
