Jia Lin wins CIHR IHDCYH Talks 2025 Competition

Jia Lin, a PhD student in the Department of Family Medicine, has been awarded First Place in the Infographics category at the Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) Talks 2025 competition, an initiative of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The competition challenges students to communicate a clear, evidence-based message to a general audience in ways that can meaningfully improve the health of children, youth, and families.

Over the past month, there was a lot of activity going on in addition to the winter Olympic games!

Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) interviews to select the Department of Family Medicine’s next cohort of 113 residents were completed and the results of the match will be revealed on March 3 at noon. If you are in the area, come join us at 5858 Côte-des-Neiges, 3rd floor, for this special annual moment. There will be pizza!

Moving Beyond Words: Reflecting on Land and Territory at the Department of Family Medicine

On January 23, the �鶹��ý��վ Department of Family Medicine hosted an in-person Land Acknowledgement Workshop that explored personal and collective relationships to land and territory. The workshop brought together faculty, learners, and staff for a reflective, dialogue-driven discussion on what land acknowledgements can and should mean in practice.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time for reflection and accountability. It represents an opportunity to honour the contributions and resilience of Black physicians, educators, and community leaders who have shaped healthcare—often while navigating significant barriers. It is also a reminder that equity in medicine is not a historical goal we have achieved, but an ongoing responsibility we must actively uphold.

For many Department members, the most significant event this month was the agreement reached between the Fédération des Médecins Omnipracticiens du Québec and the provincial government to put a halt to Law 2. At the time of writing, the result of the FMOQ members’ vote on the agreement is not available, but it appears likely that it will be approved. If that happens, the Department of Family Medicine will start the work of repairing the damage that occurred in the 7 weeks of Law 2 (retirements, departures, etc.) to further our vision of education, research, and patient care.
