The month of October has been a whirlwind of both positive and negative moments. On October 23 and 24 our Annual Department Retreat took place and was a tremendous success! On Day 1, we discussed the realities, opportunities and challenges of Distributed Medical Education. It was great to see so many of our rural teachers come together. On Day 2, we explored the theme of Human and Digital Integration in Family Medicine. Thank you to all those who participated so wholeheartedly -- your commitment, curiosity and passion came through. Together, we were truly Connected by Care!

Smudging Ceremony at the Department of Family Medicine Honors National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

On September 25, the Department of Family Medicine’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee hosted a Smudging Ceremony in its Indigenous Space, in recognition of Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The gathering offered a moment of reflection, cultural connection and shared commitment to addressing systemic inequities in health care.

Jeannie Haggerty Awarded Emerita Status

We are proud to announce that Jeannie Haggerty, PhD, Full Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has been granted Emerita status effective September 1, 2025. This prestigious distinction recognizes her remarkable contributions to primary healthcare research and education throughout an exceptional career.

September has brought a dramatic start to the academic year. As you will be aware, the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) has been using the suspension of medical student teaching as a pressure tactic to push for the withdrawal of Bill 106.

Marisa Zampini, MD, and Jean Zigby, MD, both members of �鶹��ý��վ’s Department of Family Medicine, received the inaugural Jonathan & Susan Wener Family Outstanding Physician Award during the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) Foundation’s Annual General Meeting, hosted on September 17.
