Laden\, Centre for Ethics and Education\, Univer sity of Illinois.  \n\nThis lecture is presented by the Katharine A. Pears on Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy\, in collaboration with the Ce ntre for the Study of Learning and Performance and Professor Kevin McDonou gh\, 鶹ýվ Faculty of Education.  \n\nThe event is open to all – no registration required.  \n\nAbstract \n\n“Drawing on material from m y recent book\, Networks of Trust\, I argue that colleges and \n universiti es impose hidden social costs on some of their students through the very  \n process of educating them. I focus on the role education plays in shapin g the set of \n sources of information that students trust (their “informat ional trust networks”) and the \n grounds they have for deciding what kinds of sources to trust (their “informational \n ideology”). While one effect of this process is to improve students’ capacities for \n knowledge\, it ne vertheless pulls some students away from the communities in which \n they g rew up\, communities who occupy and are held together by different trust  \n networks. Political criticisms of higher education from both the left an d the right can be \n understood\, then\, as giving expression to the anxie ties this process provokes.” \n DTSTART:20260326T183000Z DTEND:20260326T200000Z LOCATION:Stephen Allan Scott Seminar Room 16\, Old Chancellor Day Hall\, 36 44 Peel SUMMARY:Shifting Networks\, Changing Identities: The Hidden Social Costs of College Education URL:/education/channels/event/shifting-networks-changi ng-identities-hidden-social-costs-college-education-372042 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
