After Supreme Court ruling, Trump administration will find alternative ways to impose tariffs

Published: 3 March 2026

In a ruling on February 20, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was illegal. The ruling could be good news for companies that paid tariffs over the past year, but consumers who paid higher prices for tariffed products aren’t likely to get any money back, according to , an Associate Professor at 鶹ýվ Desautels.

Even without relying on IEEPA tariffs, the Trump administration will still find alternative mechanisms to impose tariffs. “There are at least four other clauses that the administration can invoke to impose tariffs,” Astvansh told the Montreal Gazette. “There is no running away from tariffs. Wise people will stop reacting to these kinds of news and realize that the world has shifted and will stay shifted for at least the next three years.”
