Remembering Howard Riggs

Howard Riggs was a dedicated, hard-working professor of math education. His work ethic was a product of his Prairie upbringing and his deep commitment to his students. He was hired by �鶹��ý��վ to teach social studies, but was pressed into service as a math educator in the Department of Elementary Education, one of the units that eventually morphed into DISE.

Her research topic is Contestations for Nigerian History Education in Primary and Secondary Schools: from Colonialism to Neocolonialism. University of Manitoba Bachelor of Arts in Psychology graduate Rachel Cluett is one of 20 Canadians selected to join the fifth cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars at �鶹��ý��վ. Recipients were chosen based on exceptional character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.

Harm Reduction and Naloxone Training Workshops

Canada in general, and Montreal specifically, have been facing a drug toxicity and fatal overdose crisis for nearly a decade. While integrated systems of interventions are necessary to address drug-related harms, the use of naloxone has been a key strategy to reduce the acute effect of opioid-involved deaths. Currently, �鶹��ý��վ does not offer naloxone trainings to the campus community, limiting students’ ability to assist in the event of an overdose.

Kiana Kishiyama remembers feeling scared when, at the start of her first undergraduate class in beginner’s Mandarin, her teacher looked at her and said, “You need to speak to me after class.”

“And I’m like, what, I’m in trouble already?”

It turned out that the teacher believed that Kishiyama, who was adopted from China by a Canadian couple, was just being modest about her language skills.
