Since 1994, the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal's biennial Generation composition contest has given 61 Canadian composers the opportunity to define their voices and connect with audiences across Canada. This year, and are two of four Generation2020 winners selected from more than 50 applicants.

Choral conductor Wayne Riddell has long been an important figure in the Montreal and Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ music communities, holding positions such as the chorus master of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and professor at the Schulich School of Music. Riddell has established a bequest that will support choral students at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ through two separate funds -- the Wayne Riddell Choral Award, and the Norman Beckow Choral Excellence Endowment Fund (named after his late partner).

Congratulations to saxophonist Jacob Do (BMus 2021), who won the on June 26, 2019. Created as part of the Festival's 40th anniversary, the award is given as part of a competition open to selected Quebec university student musicians identifying as part of a visible minority.

In 2017, Prof. Brian Cherney was the subject of an entire issue of Intersections (a publication by the ) after a conference held in his honour at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾. Available online for the first time, the issue features essays by many Schulich faculty members on Cherney and his music, including writings by Prof. Chris Paul Harman, Prof. Christoph Neidhöfer, and Cherney himself.

We are pleased to invite Schulich faculty, staff, students, and alumni to submit proposals for presentations for inclusion in an LGBTQ2I+ History Month event. Scheduled for 28 September 2019 (7:00 p.m., Wirth Opera Studio), the event aims to highlight the accomplishments of LGBTQ2I+ musicians and music researchers past and present, while displaying the breadth and scope of work within the broader field of music. Presentations may take the form of a research paper, musical performance, new composition, or combination of these.

Since beginning his international career in 1974, guitarist Pat Metheny has garnered widespread critical acclaim, demonstrated astonishing versatility as an artist, and has consistently been at the forefront of music technology. On May 29, 2019, his accomplishments will be recognized by Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ through his reception of an Honorary Doctorate of Music at the Spring Convocation.

This month Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ is hosting the 34th Annual Meeting of the – the first time the event has ever been held in Montreal. NECMT’s main purpose is to foster the development of music theory, and provide a forum for exchanging ideas between music theorists.

On the occasion of World Hearing Day (WHD) on March 3, theÌýSchulich School of Music of Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾, in collaboration with theÌýCentre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), presents the Hearing-Care Platform: A practical and accessible set of tools for the self-assessment of noise exposure, which are particularly aimed at young musicians and youths in general.

Congratulations to Nick Squire (MMus 2008), who recently won the Grammy Award for for his work onÌýShostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 11Ìýby Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This win brings his Grammy count up to a total of four, as he wasÌýcredited as a recording engineer on album whichÌýwon Grammys forÌýBest Orchestra Performance in 2015, 2016, and 2018.

La production de Die Zauberflöte d’Opéra Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ a récemment été saluée par le journaliste Daniel Raymond dans sa critique sur le site atuvu.ca. Une grande partie des membres de la production, tant sur scène que dans les coulisses, ont été félicités pour le succès remarquable de l’opéra, en passant par le directeur artistique Patrick Hansen et la metteuse en scène Jessica Derventzis, à Vincent Lefèvre (décors), Florence Cornet (maquillages) et Ginette Grenier (costumes), qui ont tous contribué à donner vie au concept unique de steampunk de l’opéra.
