A research team led by 鶹ýվ geochemist Peter Douglas has used a new method for measuring the rate at which methane is produced by microbes breaking down thawing permafrost. The breakthrough could lead to an improvement in our ability to predict future releases of the potent greenhouse gas as long‑frozen layers of soil begin to thaw.

With the federal ban of single-use plastics planned for this year, the demand for alternatives to everyday plastic products, such as straws, is set to increase., a startup company born through a collaboration between chemistry professors from 鶹ýվ and Lakehead University, is betting on cellulose for making drinking straws that don’t suck for the environment.

The鶹ýվ Sustainability Systems Initiative islooking for big ideas in sustainability research from 鶹ýվ faculty members based in the social sciences and humanities.

Solutions to sustainability challenges require much more than technological innovation, as viable plans to achieve sustainability must also address social and economic factors and conditions. For example, shifting society towards a more sustainable path will necessitate new norms, attitudes, habits, laws, economic incentives or instruments and public policies.

SPOT earns Sustainability Bronze!

The School of Physical and Occupational Therapy has been awarded the Bronze level rating for the unit, by 鶹ýվ's Office of Sustainability. The designation is a testament to the importance that the unit places on activities that are respectful of the three dimensions of sustainability: social, economic and environment.

This fall, nine faculty and department Frosh attained Gold-level Sustainable Event Certification.

“I wasn’t sure if we would be able to get certify because we’re so big – we’re 1,800 students,” said Grace Jumbo, Inclusivity and Equity Coordinator for Arts Frosh, which also marked 鶹ýվ’s 150thcertified Sustainable Event.

The Office of Sustainability is recruiting Sustainable Events Consultant for the 2019-2020 academic year!

As a volunteer with the Sustainable Events Consultant team, you will liaise with event organizers in the 鶹ýվ community to ensure that they are organized in the most sustainable way possible. By utilizing both online and print resources, you will help event organizers gain access to knowledge about sustainable resources, and help ensure best practices at events.
