The Faculty of Law of Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ is delighted to announce that starting January 2014, it will host The American Journal of Comparative Law, in partnership with the Georgetown University Law Center. Professor Helge Dedek, who is Director of the Institute of Comparative Law at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾, has been named co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, together with two colleagues in Washington D.C.

The Committee is inviting submission of papers that, among other things, will discuss and critically analyze the current socio-political, strategic and legal challenges to the achievement of good global space governance and, as well, propose viable policy options and regulatory mechanisms that will help ensure that present generations of humanity can continue their exploration and use of outer space without seriously compromising the possibility for future generations to do the same.

On October 29, 2013, the Faculty of Law held a reception in the Common Room to honour the memory of Alex Konigsberg QC, BCL’63, and to also mark the launch of the Alex Konigsberg Management & Law Bursary.

The Faculty of Law was privileged to welcome Mr. Konigsberg’s widow, Vivian Konigsberg, and many members of his family. Several of his friends, colleagues and former Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ Law classmates also attended.

The October 2013 edition of Focus online takes a look at the Faculty of Law’s 5th annual DCL retreat that took place this September, to discuss ‘Finding Our Place in Academic Life.’

The event, which was coorganized by doctoral candidates Jodi Lazare and Geoffrey Conrad, drew over 30 students for a full day of rewarding and insightful discussion.

A team of five Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ students won the 2013 Hult Prize, valued at $1 million for their social enterprise project to secure food for undernourished communities in urban slums. Among them is Shobhita Soor, a Law/MBA student.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Dr. Yaw Nyampong has been named Executive Director of the Centre for Research in Air & Space Law.

Yaw Nyampong (LLM’05, DCL’11) is also a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, Legon. He held an Arsenault Postdoctoral Fellowship at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾'s Institute of Air & Space Law in 2011-2012, and a Boulton Fellowship at the Faculty of Law in 2012-2013.

We are happy to announce that the latest publication from the Crépeau Centre is (Cambridge University Press, 2013), which was edited by Professor Lionel Smith.

This collection of 22 essays makes a significant contribution to the comparative study of trusts. It includes contributions from Canada, the U.S., England, France, Scotland, South Africa, Israel and China.

The Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law is happy to welcome Vanessa Arviset as its new Assistant Director. She takes over from Me Régine Tremblay.

Me Vanessa Arviset, BCL/LLB’06, received the Osgoode Society Legal History Prize (2005) during her studies at the Faculty. Previously, she obtained a BA and MA in philosophy from the Université de Montréal. A member of the Barreau du Québec, Me Arviset practiced in Montreal in the fields of maritime law and commercial litigation.

On August 20, 2013, Fred Headon (BCL’96, LLB’96) took over the helm as President of the Canadian Bar Association () during the closing luncheon of the CBA's annual Legal Conference in Saskatoon.

Headon currently leads Air Canada’s in-house labour and employment law team at the company’s headquarters in Montreal. From 1999 to 2006, he practised labour and employment law, human rights and privacy law, and administrative and constitutional law at McCarthy Tétrault in Montreal.

The Faculty of Law was delighted to learn that our colleague Daniel Boyer (BA’79, MLIS’88), Head Librarian of the Nahum Gelber Law Library, was named Associate Dean of User Services of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ Library for a two-year mandate.

As well, Me Boyer has also been named to the board of directors of the Société québécoise d'information juridique (SOQUIJ) for a period of five years, following the recommendation of the Deans of law faculties across Quebec.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Daniel Weinstock to the position of Director of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ Institute for Health and Social Policy, an interdisciplinary institute housed within the Faculty of Medicine at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾, starting August 1.
