While methods of\nens lavement\, the routes on which they came to Izmir\, and the\nprocess of ab olition are coming to light\, the history of Africans\nbeyond emancipation in Izmir and throughout the Ottoman Empire is\nlargely unknown. Drawing o n both local and central government\narchival documents\, this paper will focus on instances where\nemancipated Africans appear as criminals. Four c ases will be\npresented\, situating each in the social and economic contex t of\nlate Ottoman Izmir.\nThese documents will also shed light on the his toriographical\nand archival challenges of studying the social history of \nemancipated slaves in the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey.\nSpecificall y\, the effect of marginality in representations of\nemancipated Africans in the documents will be examined.
