DESCRIPTION:Science Education in the 21st Century: Using the tools of\nscie
 nce to teach university-level science\nGuided by experimental tests of the
 ory and practice\, science has\nadvanced rapidly in the past 500 years. Gu
 ided primarily by\ntradition and dogma\, science education meanwhile has r
 emained\nlargely medieval. Research on how people learn is now revealing h
 ow\nmany teachers badly misinterpret what students are thinking and\nlearn
 ing from traditional science classes and exams. However\,\nresearch is als
 o providing insights on how to do much better. The\ncombination of this re
 search with modern information technology is\nsetting the stage for a new 
 approach that can provide the relevant\nand effective science education fo
 r all students that is needed for\nthe 21st century. I will discuss the fa
 ilures of traditional\neducational practices\, even as used by “very good”
  teachers\, and\nthe successes of some new practices and technology that\n
 characterize this more effective approach\, and how these results\nare hig
 hly consistent with findings from cognitive science.\n(Note: Physics Lectu
