February 14, 2026 | Pearl EliadisÌýjoined the Difference Makers podcast to reflect on her human rights work in Canada and in post-conflict countries. Eliadis described her role in Rwanda in the late 1990s, helping the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stand up the country's Human Rights Commission and Unity and Reconciliation Commission in the aftermath of the genocide. She drew a through-line to her ongoing work with Shield of Athena Family Services in Montreal, which supports women facing conjugal violence with culturally and linguistically tailored care. Eliadis says, "the patterns I saw internationally, especially in the context of domestic and intimate partner violence in other countries, replicate themselves here. The difference is infrastructure and resources."
