If you had only six words to describe who you are, what would they be?

This simple yet powerful exercise is inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s famous six-word story challenge. Legend has it that he once wrote, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In just six words, a whole story unfolds. That same principle can be applied to how we understand and communicate ourselves, especially in our careers.

A six-word bio is not a job title or a résumé summary. It’s a short phrase that captures the essence of who you are; your values, perspective, or lived experience. It’s not about impressing others; it’s about clarity.

Why it matters

Career transitions, job searches, and periods of professional uncertainty can easily disconnect us from who we are at our core. A six-word bio offers a grounding anchor. It helps individuals reconnect with their strengths, experiences, and sense of purpose – which, in turn, builds confidence.

When people are clear on who they are, they communicate more authentically. That authenticity shows up in interviews, networking conversations, and decision-making. In today’s evolving labour market, employers increasingly value emotional intelligence, adaptability, and self-awareness – qualities that begin with inner clarity.

How to create your six-word bio

Start by pausing. Reflection is key.

Ask yourself:

  • What values guide me?
  • What experiences have shaped me?
  • How do I show up when things are challenging?
  • What do I want to be known for?

Write freely at first, without editing. Then refine. Remove what feels unnecessary until only the essence remains. There is no “right” six-word bio; only one that feels true to you.

For example, my own six-word bio emerged quietly during reflection and later revealed deeper meaning through lived experience: “Always finding light, even in shadow.”

Practical ways to use it

A six-word bio can be:

  • A grounding statement before interviews or presentations
  • A compass when navigating career decisions
  • A subtle addition to a résumé summary, LinkedIn profile, or personal branding statement
  • A reminder of who you are beyond any single role or title

In career coaching, we often focus on external tools and strategies. A six-word bio reminds us that clarity begins within. When you know who you are, you communicate with greater confidence, navigate change with intention, and show up more fully; in your career and in life.

So, I’ll leave you with this question: What would your six-word bio be?
